what genres?
for dance genres the artists themselves or their agents may supply free to use info similar to what freshradio said but on a smaller scale. even for big artists, if you can trace back the original story to the artists press agency you are most unlikely to get trouble for using it if its already been on the BBC or similar. for more underground dance genres some artists are almost a bit reclusive/unwilling to "self promote" which is ironically a bit of a pain if you do want to put something more in your show about them!
Bear in mind two things though - if you are playing mainstream music there's a ton of music / artist gossip info anyway. introducing more might not add much value to your program.
if you are not, with dance genres particularly folk are now realising that the days of making a
main paying career out of being either a musician or radio presenter are coming to an end. The same digital revolution what makes our stations possible took away the revenue stream for a "pop star lifestyle" - the current stars are related to old showbiz types or have connections, once these die out so will that industry. I've got a side interest in natural history and environment (plus I once worked for the UK's environment ministry) - even completely doomed species do
not just go extinct
overnight so its easy to mistakenly think they are still thriving.
This won't stop folk making music, DJ'ing, presenting shows or anything else but increasingly they juggle this with a second day job, where their employers may or may not be supportive but even if they are they may not want the controversy associated with a employee in the entertaintment industry. hence some artistes becoming "publicity shy" .
This isn't completely harsh - say you ran a cupcake shop and a young woman working there was a really good DJ/producer. would you really want your business disrupted or even put at risk by tons of fans hanging around, or worse, stalkers and having to call the cops on them and spend extra on security for your employee? it might turn out that you have to painfully let her go even if she is a really good employee and a friend, and yet she can't make enough to support her family from music than cupcakes..
However where you might be able to get extra content (albeit with obvious positive spin) if you are makign a specialist music program is info about what instruments, studio equipment etc they use, how they make music, that sort of thing. this should work for EDM genres and others as though I'm no expert on other genres I know that folk are really passionate about different guitars and other instruments and their sound (my little sister is a very talented guitarist and singer for instance).
perhaps we as online stations should leave gossip to trashy mainstream companies what get themselves nicked for grubbing through dustbins and robbing folks voicemail pin codes and private phone call info, and concentrate more on music
